Miki’s Hind Leg Amputation Story
My puppy, Miki, was struck by a car last week and had to have one of her hind legs amputated. On the days that I have to work late, my neighbor’s daughter lets Miki out into the yard to relieve herself, usually in the afternoon. Unfortunately, on this day, the girl wasn’t paying attention and Miki got loose. She ran out into the road and, before the girl could grab her, a car hit Miki, crushing one of her hind legs. The woman who was driving the car took Miki and the girl to the vet. They also contacted me, and I left work immediately to go to the vet. Sadly, the vet told me that Miki would need a very expensive surgery to repair her leg, and even if she got the surgery she may not recover fully.
The only other option was hind leg amputation. The amputation was less costly, but still very expensive. I opted for the amputation and left Miki at the vet’s overnight to prepare for the surgery. The next morning, they removed her leg, and later that afternoon I was able to bring Miki home.
I’m just glad to have my puppy back now, but she still seems very sad and in pain. I’ve been helping her get around, and I can tell that the recovery process will be very long and slow. I’m trying to take more time off from work so that I can help her adjust, but it’s difficult since I still have to pay for the amputation surgery. It’s heartbreaking to see my once energetic and playful puppy moping around the house, mostly just sleeping and eating very little.
I’m doing everything I can and paying special attention to her during these difficult times in hopes that she recovers fully from her hind leg amputation and gets back to acting like her happy self. It’s been an emotionally taxing week, but I’m confident that Miki will get through this just fine. I love her more than ever, and I know that I’m lucky to still have her around.
