Meet Tripawd Pitbull Astrid
Astrid is a 7 year old Pitbull who was found after being thrown down a ravine to die along with another dog after being overbred. The other dog died. Astrid was found and taken to a local humane society where she would have been euthanized due to the extent of her injuries. Astrid suffered a vertebrae stroke, and an old elbow fracture that was never treated. She was unable to walk on her front legs. Forgotten Dog rescue and I as her foster stepped up to pull her from the shelter. She immediately saw specialists, had her elbow surgery and spay. Unfortunately the elbow had antiobiotic resistant bacteria that kept breaking down the bone and her elbow surgery failed. The decision was made to remove her front leg.
Once I knew she was going to be a tripod I started googling to learn more. I came across Tripawds. I have learned so much and immediately scheduled her PT before she even had surgery! We are 3 weeks post surgery she had her first physical therapy today and it was amazing!
We are starting with acupuncture and mobility exercises. At home we are starting with Active hip flexor stretches, hip stretches, and cookie stretches (nose to shoulder) and some textured surfaces to stimulate her neurologically. She believes Astrid will be able to have a more normal gate and be able to get up, down, and sit with continued efforts.
With all life as thrown at her, she takes it all in stride and I think will be a breed ambassador for not only Pitbulls, but Tripawds alike! She is capable of more than myself or even herself realizes, have to get out of our own minds and focus on what she can do.
