Scarlett is a 13-year-old Miniature Schnauzer, who was diagnosed with melanoma cancer in her front forelimb in February 2024.

Although we had two aggressive surgeries to remove her cancer, it grew back a third time. It was this third time within seven months and I could see with each surgery she was hurting more and more. It was at this point that I wanted to be aggressive in attacking the cancer and decided to amputate her leg, instead of trying radiation.

It was not an easy choice to make, and I still wonder if I made the right decision or not. However, having had done a CT/PET scan in June, I would hate myself if I let the cancer grow to her otherwise healthy body

I have had Scarlett since she was a baby, at eight weeks old. She has been the love of my life since and has gotten me through so much in life.

When Scarlett was first diagnosed with cancer, I knew I had to fight it no matter what the costs were. This included surgeries, driving endlessly to a nearby university, and days filled with tears. I have been lucky to have the support I have through friends, multiple foundations, and family.

Tripawd Scarlett At-Home Rehab Routine for Mobility and Strength

Scarlett was prescribed several exercises to help maintain her mobility. This includes daily exercises and weekly exercises.

  • Her daily exercise includes our normal walking routine (while it’s not as long as it once was, we’re still walking daily) doggie back massage, sit/stand, and stretching.
  • For stretching, I have Scarlett either prop her leg up on the stair step and reach up, or I have her stretch over an exercise ball. This helps keep her flexible and moving.
  • Weekly exercises include having her front paw on the stair step and moving her head towards one side. We do this towards her back and then down towards her hawk. The purpose of this exercise is to help shift weight onto her back legs and to strengthen her core.

In addition, this help stretches her body. Scarlett is very enthusiastic about her treats and sometimes gets too excited during exercises. (see video)

In addition, Scarlett works on going from a sitting position to a standing position. This helps her to balance while going from a sit-to-stand position. We like to work on walking backwards, which helps to build Scarlett’s back leg muscles. It helps to strengthen muscles that aren’t used when walking forward.

Lessons Learned from Tripawd Scarlett’s Recovery Journey

Throughout this experience, I’ve learned the importance of keeping her mobile and not let her missing leg impact her abilities. I’ve also learned that working all her muscles – not just her legs will help prolong Scarlett’s ability to maneuver.
