My sweet pup Charlie is a 4 year old English cream golden retriever.
On Labor Day weekend he started with a limp in his left hind leg that spiraled us into 2 months of appointments, medication, bad news and follow ups.
It ultimately led to a diagnosis of a grade 3 cutaneous mast cell tumor.

When Amputation Became the Right Choice for Tripawd Charlie
We chose to do an amputation as the mass on his leg had gotten so bad with bleeding and ulcerations that it was unmanageable trying to control it even with bandages and it was painful for Charlie.
His surgery went well and he has been adjusting to tripod life.
Tripawd Charlie Begins Rehab Care
We made a rehab appointment at City Wide Vet in Philadelphia with the wonderful Dr. Julie Geisler.

She assessed him and led him through some exercises.
Exercises to Build Balance and Strength for Tripawd Charlie
One of them was a figure 8 exercise around some cones for 30 seconds for 3 times. This helps with his coordination and balance.
Another exercise was a squat where he has to sit with good posture then she put a treat in front of him and he stands up right away to get it. This improves his posture and strengthening.

Massage, Comfort, and Ongoing Support for Tripawd Charlie
She also showed me how to massage him and roll his skin to relieve any tension and keep him comfortable. The massage can be 5-10 minutes.
I learned a lot of helpful exercises to help keep Charlie’s remaining limbs strong.
It was also great to have him evaluated to make sure he had a good range of motion and was walking well on his own.

Confidence Moving Forward for Tripawd Charlie
It made me feel more confident with taking care of him at home and making sure I am doing everything I can for him.
I would highly recommend a rehab appointment to help manage the care of your tripod pup so they can live a full life and stay strong.
