On December 14, 2025, our sweet pup, Cooper, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and given 4-6 months to live.

They found the mass in his front left shoulder, meaning an amputation would take not only his leg, but his entire shoulder blade as well.

On New Year’s Eve we picked up our new tripod puppy and brought him home. At 10.5 years and 70lbs, we braced for a difficult and long recovery for our front-leg amputee.

His mutt mix of Australian Cattle Dog, Pit Bull, Lab, German Shepherd, German Shorthaired Pointer, and Llewellin Setter gives him quite the stubborn, smart, protective personality.

Our Cooper Faces Challenges During Recovery

We foolishly hoped he would bounce back to his normal life quickly, but ran into issues with walking on smooth or uneven surfaces, overall balance, fatigue, and stairs.

We have a two-story house and the entire family sleeps upstairs. Over the first month, after too many spills on the stairs, Cooper became too scared to take them anymore. We knew it was time for PT.

What a Difference Rehab Therapy Made for Him

Using the Tripawds website, we found Canine Rehabilitation & Conditioning Group in Broomfield, CO. We gave Coop his chill pills, and went through the typical script of explaining how reactive Cooper is, and best ways to approach and interact with him.

The first introduction to Dr. Shannon Egan was absolutely amazing as she took her time and read Cooper’s body language. She got him to relax on a PEMF mat to go through the initial exam.

How We Discovered PEMF Therapy

The PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) mat uses low-frequency electromagnetic waves to penetrate deep into tissue to stimulate cell repair, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation. There is also a frequency that provides relaxation for his anxiety.

The physical exam tested his balance, strength, and flexibility. We discovered he had very tight hamstrings and hip-flexors, as well as the need for improved muscle tone in his front right leg.

Another therapist, Carrie, had extensive experience with reactive dogs and got Cooper onto the water treadmill and walking! With a truckload of treats and nonstop encouragement, Cooper took on his first PEMF session, physical therapy exam, and water treadmill.

Our At-Home Exercises

We left with three at-home exercises to be performed 2-3 times per day for increased mobility, balance, and confidence:

  1. Stair planking – Cooper steps up on one stair and holds for 10 seconds to increase his core strength
  2. Step overs – Cooper slowly walks over a pole on the ground alternating with his back legs (no bunny hops) to increase his hind leg mobility
  3. Sit-to-Stand – Cooper practices sitting with good form (hips and feet are square) and rising to a stand using his back legs together to encourage good posture and hind lend strength

His Recovery Journey Continues

We are learning that we need to be patient and let Cooper recover at his own pace, respecting his energy levels and pain management. It’s going to be a longer road to get our boy over his fears and more mobile, but it’s been well worth it when we see how happy he is to conquer a new task!
