I always love hearing the stories of how rescue animals find their way into forever homes! It’s often a mysterious journey with a fair share of improbable happenstance; as such was Winston’s story.

Winston

Winston is a 1.5 year old Tripawd shepherd mix from Tijuana, Mexico, where he was believed to have been hit by a car. By the time the rescue found him he had healed, though improperly. He had learned to get by. When I met Winston he had very limited use of his hind left leg. I suspected he was in some pain. I decided to foster him until we could determine what needed to be done. After meeting with surgeons and specialists, it was decided – it needed to be removed. He would lose a leg, but gain a family. His adoption became official.

How Rehab Helps Tripawd Shepherd Mix Winston

Winston began rehabilitation with Dr. Camille at Penryn Pet Hospital two weeks after surgery. After his intake and assessment we quickly determined that rehab would be a great fit for him – he is very agile and loves learning new things! We learned stretches, massages and exercises to keep him moving and feeling his best. Here he is practicing balance and developing core strength on a K9 FitBone with Dr. Camille.

But Winston’s story took a turn. (It is a hero’s journey after all!) What we thought would be a straightforward recovery took a turn when his wound became infected. We learned that it was MRSP, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius. He has been on several antibiotics for over a month now and is finally on the mend! He is feeling great and has been having fun doing therapy exercises on my Bosu Ball. We do daily stretching, massaging, and go on several walks a day where we practice obedience training as well.

Truly, I was nervous to adopt a dog that would become a Tripawd. What was I getting myself into? But then I was comforted by the resources and stories on the Tripawds site. What was nervousness has now become a sense of purpose and pride. I am looking forward to giving Winston the best life! If his training and temperament allow, I would love to volunteer with him as a therapy dog. He would be such a great ambassador for Tripawds and hopefully pass along inspiration through his own perseverance and healing.
