Tripawd Oreo and the Difficult Decision
Having to amputate a leg on a 13-year-old dog was one of the most stressful, anxiety ridden experiences in my life. I constantly asked, “Will this be the right decision?”
Oreo, a spirited thirteen-year-old Pitbull, had lost her left rear leg to osteosarcoma just a few months prior. Despite her resilience, I knew she needed professional guidance to ensure a smooth transition to her new life as a Tripawd.

Tripawd Oreo Begins Rehabilitation
Our certified rehabilitation therapist, after a thorough examination, devised a customized exercise plan to address Oreo’s specific needs.
The primary goals were to improve her balance, strength, and range of motion, while also reducing the risk of secondary injuries.
Tripawd Oreo Experiences In-Clinic Therapy
The in-clinic exercises were both fascinating and fun to watch. Oreo was guided through a series of exercises to challenge her balance and agility.

The therapist also employed various modalities, such as water therapy and massage, to promote relaxation and reduce muscle tension.
Tripawd Oreo Practices At-Home Exercises
For our at-home exercises, we were instructed to perform the following routines two to three times a day:
- Repeated sit/stands: Encourage her to go from stand to sit several times, having someone from behind help her place into a proper sit to use the right muscles.
- Weight shifts: Stand beside Oreo, holding treats near her nose, and slowly move them\ from side to side, prompting her to shift her weight.
- Incline walking: Place Oreo’s favorite toys or treats at the top of a gentle incline, encouraging her to walk up and strengthen her remaining legs.
These exercises were specifically designed to improve Oreo’s proprioception (awareness of body position), strengthen her core and remaining limbs, and enhance her overall mobility. We also did exercises in her wheelchair to help her with positioning.

Lessons Learned from Tripawd Oreo’s Rehabilitation
The most valuable lesson I learned from this experience is the importance of patience and consistency. Rehabilitation is a gradual process that requires dedication and persistence.
By committing to these exercises and working closely with our rehabilitation therapist, I have witnessed significant improvements in Oreo’s confidence, strength, and agility.
Tripawd Oreo Thrives Moving Forward
As we continue on this journey, I am grateful for the expertise and support of our rehabilitation team. With their guidance, Oreo is thriving as a Tripawd. I now feel confident about my decision.
