Meet #TripawdRescue Wilbur the 3-Legged Coonhound

Wilbur is a 4 year old Bluetick Coonhound with the kindest eyes you will ever see. He has been to the shelter 3 separate times, and has been brought back each time because he is such a master escape artist. The last time he was brought back, he had been hit by a car after bolting out an opened door, and needed his left hind leg amputated.

It was at this point Abbi, his foster mom took Wilbur in and started training him. He needed 2 leashes at all times, and was tied down when riding in a car. He escaped one more time during her foster care and she chased him for 2 hours.

Fast-forward 4 months and Wilbur is one of the most mellow, loving, and well behaved dogs you will encounter. He is obedient and goes on walks without a leash. He will sit, lay down, and loves to be cuddled.

Wilbur’s new humans are named Katie and Andy. They got married last fall and just moved into a house by a lake in Minnesota. His new cat brother’s name is Boaz, and the two are still very curious about each other. Katie and Andy started looking for a dog when they bought their new house. They had been living in a small apartment before, and just could not justify it. But with a new yard, the lake close by, and miles of walking trails, they were excited to find the right pup to fit with their young family. Wilbur loves to run and hike and is excited to explore a whole new city with his new family.

Katie’s family had several dogs as she was growing up. Andy had always loved animals, but had never had a dog of his own. Andy and Katie both work in healthcare and were looking for a friend to come home to after a hard day at work.

Wilbur’s big struggle has been with food; keeping his weight up and eating as much as he should, when he should. Katie and Andy will keep working with him on eating the right diet and getting him to a healthy weight.

Though they have only been together for a short amount of time, there is already a strong bond between Wilbur and his new family. They are excited to make memories and explore together
