Lacey’s Story

My baby, Lacey, is a Chihuahua mix breed. Lacey’s leg was fractured in 2013 and after 2 operations, she was not better. Unfortunately, I could not afford any additional operations. My choices were homelessness or have a roof over our heads while making her as comfortable as possible. My heart was broken every day. When I walked her, I would wrap her leg in adhesive bandages with small splints. When I turned 62 years old in 2016, I was able to begin the search for help for her.

I tried many on-line companies who were no help. I took her to a VCA hospital in August 2017. They told me that if I signed up for their pet care club ($75.00 monthly) – her amputation would be included, which turned out to be false. She had an appointment for her spay, microchip and amputation, they asked for $1,000. I did not have the money. The vet that was to operate on her admitted to me that they did not explain their rules completely. I looked over all the documentation and saw so many discrepancies. On the advice of a friend, I gave the file to Virginia’s Regulatory Commission with proof that they changed her birth date – so they could charge me the highest amount along with other inconsistencies.

On additional advice, I applied online at the SPCA in Richmond in October. They tried to get her records from VCA – who refused to release them. I applied to SPCA again in May and again VCA would not release her records – BUT they decided to take her case anyway and finally made an appointment for Lacey. Long story short – she had her amputation and spay done on May 29th, 2018. Although their prices are much lower, I still cannot afford it and am praying that you can help me. According to the ASAP grant application requirements, I have attached photos and proof of income and the vet bill.

Lacey means the world to me – I do not know what I would do if I didn’t wake up to her every morning. I do know that now she is so much happier and not in pain, and I can walk her without feeling her pain.
