Roscoe’s Story
Roscoe is a 4 year old black Lab who is full of life and love. He heals anyone who comes in contact with him and loves to run, swim, and play.
He welcomes all visitors and loves to show off his country trails! Roscoe wandered onto a rarely used gravel road during a hike in the woods. As a tractor was approaching, Roscoe became confused and in trying to move away from the tractor, turned toward it. The tractor tried to slow, slamming the brakes. Unfortunately, Roscoe was compromised and his left rear leg was amputated in emergency surgery.
Roscoe has been hopping around the house and is not in the most comfortable state. He is a rescue from a puppy mill so his left eye was removed due to hereditary conditions and he had been born without a socket in either acetabulum on his hips. His hips are subluxated and unfortunately, he was left with his right leg, the weakest back leg. His care at the hospital was excellent and recovery was much quicker than we expected. We kept a soft mound of blankets and water bowl near him and still have it for him to lay on. The socks and boot also helps sores that have developed as he tries to maneuver on a painful leg.
For a normal dog, I would not expect many problems. With his special circumstance, he still seems happy and lively. We are extremely pleased with the surgery center. In his recovery, we are using the socks and boots to keep him from slipping inside the house. The same surgery center will conduct a total hip replacement this winter.
We hope that through this successful surgery and the next, he will be up and running on all 3 legs by Spring. Roscoe may have had his share of bad luck but with the support of a caring community, we hope he will be with us for a long life full of love, play, swimming in the ponds and more hikes in the woods.
