Vet Financial Aid for Three Legged Rescue Dog, Fox
Fox is an approximately 2 year old mixed breed who wandered up to our house, injured and very underweight. We took him to the vet, and the vet said he had most likely been hit by a car a few days before and had been wandering since. He had a dislocated hip and a broken knee on the same leg.
The vet said because the hip had been out of place for so long, it couldn’t be put back in, and since his knee was broken too, amputation was the best option. He was so skinny, had terrible fleas, and was infested with 3 different kinds of worms, so we’ve been getting him healthy and worm-free for the last month or so. In the meantime, we have fallen completely in love with him.
He is the sweetest, most good natured dog! I don’t understand how he could be so sweet while in so much pain! He finally had his amputation surgery March 3rd. We had no idea it was TriDay until afterwards!
Picking him up from the vet after surgery was a shock. I thought I was prepared, but I wasn’t. I had to remind myself that amputation really was the best option, and that I had done the right thing, because he looked so sad and miserable.
He was sent home with 300 mg of gabapentin every 8-10 hours, and 37.5 mg of carprofen every 12-24 hours. The vet also has him on Clavamox to prevent infection.
The night of the surgery was really hard. He couldn’t get comfortable, wouldn’t eat or drink, and seemed so miserable it made me cry. I ended up sleeping on the floor next to his bed. But first thing the next morning he was so much better, he was eating and drinking and wagging his tail again, and today (3 days later) he already seems to be pretty much back to normal!
I’m having to really make sure he is taking it easy, he wants to run and play! It amazes me how resilient dogs are!
